Mediation Training Programs

This curriculum is tailored to convey the mediation procedure as applied by Iowa Mediation Service (IMS).  Attendees will gain insight into the field of conflict management and acquire effective skills and strategies to cultivate their unique mediation style.

INtroduction to Mediation Skills

This course provides 32.0 hours of basic mediation training. 
The education program includes lectures, video presentations, structured exercises, role-playing, virtual learning, and self-study activities.  The course outline includes:
  • Overview and introduction to conflict management, negotiation, and mediation;
  • Delivery styles, skills, strategies and techniques;
  • Understand bias;
  • Settlement strategies and how to analyze the situation;
  • Reality testing;
  • The use of experts and advocates in mediation;
  • Ethical guidelines;
  • Handling impasse and power disparities;
  • Decision making;
  • Agreement writing; 
  • Virtual mediation skills.

Introduction to Mediation Skills

Advanced Mediation Skills

This course aims to enhance the mediation skills of an experience practitioner. Our expert instructors will explore complex cases, illustrating the range of possibilities that they hold. The training program includes lectures, video presentations, structured exercises, virtual learning and self-study activities. The course outline includes:
  • The philosophy of mediation and the spectrum of approaches;
  • Handling power disparities and strategies for working with competitive parties;
  • Implementing advanced mediation techniques;
  • Communication across culture and understanding implicit bias;
  • The effective use of questions in mediation; and
  • Ethical considerations and best practices.
This course provides 8.0 hours of advanced mediation skills training, which includes one hour of ethics CLE and one hour of diversity CLE.
